First track session of 2013 season done

Last night was my first track session for the 2013 season. After a long day in a training course out at Microsoft (SCCM 2012 : Advanced Concepts and Administration), I joined Ben Moreau for a staple distance runner track session at ES Marks – Quarters. The session consists of 8 x 400m reps, with a 200m float in between. It’s constant running for 4.8km or 12 laps. Usually, this session kind of ends up becoming a race, especially if you do the same session up at Falls Creek over the New Year period…. bragging rights and all that at the Unofficial Australian Quarters Championships.

es-marksDo not let the image to the right fool you, ES Marks does not look that good at the moment. There is no grass in the middle, and there is a cyclone fence around the inside of lane one. That didn’t matter though, as Ben and I shared it around, taking two reps each (3 laps total) throughout. Ben told me that we ran 65-to-66-second 400m reps, with our floats in 38-seconds. We ran the last rep in 61-seconds, which was not too bad for us marathon boys in our opening track session. On the back of us was a young guy (15y.o.), Kurt, who got hung on through 4 laps, after passing 1500m in a near-PB. He then jumped in for the last 3 laps and tried again to hold on…. A glutton for punishment but it shows Kurts determination to get faster as an athlete.

Pre-session, the motivation wasn’t high, especially when I saw the construction at the track, and then with how long and taxing the day was, but I still ran very consistent reps, and I finished with a tidy 13:55. Can’t complain with that. Maybe by the time I run Zatopek:10, I will be back down running in the 13:30s for quarters.

Its been a long time since I’ve raced, 15th April to be precise, and a lot has changed over these six months. Everything is finally getting back in order, and I’m enjoying the running again and really pushing myself. This should be a good summer.
