62nd NSW Road Relays: Sydney University V Randwick Botany

The men’s open 4x4km race at the 2012 NSW Road Relays, to be held this Saturday at Ourimbah on the Central Coast, promises to be one of the best races in the event’s 61 year history.

Over the last few years, team events at the Athletics NSW addidas winter series have been dominated by Sydney University or Randwick Botany. Already this year Sydney University have won the NSW Cross Country, NSW Road Championships and finished first and second in the cross country relays. But will this winning streak continue? Randwick Botany have won the last six road relay titles and will be spearheaded by London bound Olympian Jeff Hunt. After his NSW Cross Country win, Hunt declared: “For the Sydney University boys, the Randwick Botany Harriers road relay train is coming, so be ready – it’s gonna be a cracker.”

However Sydney University team manager Dean Gleeson is happy to go into the race as the underdogs.

“We are really looking forward to this weekend. It should be an interesting race at the Road Relays. I speak for all the good men and women of SUAC when I say out club is flattered to even be mentioned in the same breath as NSW athletic greats such as Jeff Hunt and Jeremy Roff,” Gleeson said.

“Hunt is clearly going well after his win at NSW cross country and will represent Australia in London so he is getting into the best shape of his life although he could probably benefit from eating an extra sandwich or two. Roff is coming back from injury but is never too far away from running fast. Further he is one of the best team men going around. Their third athlete Moureau from the UK has run a 2.16 marathon so should be a very solid addition. Courtney Carter will complete the foursome, again back from injury but running consistently. Overall this is an incredibly hard team to beat. Combine this with the expertise of coach Ken Green and they seem unbeatable. I heard they have been training on the course as well.”
