one week down….. a few more to go

I completed my first structured week of training last week. I hit 130km with just some general runs, a light session on Saturday and a longish run on Sunday. Nothing to flash to mark four weeks post-marathon, but a good start.

Surprisingly, Saturday was the first time I had run a kilometre faster than four minutes since my marathon. The session was 3 x (1.2km, 2mins rest, 450m hill, jog down). I was hurting in the ‘k-reps’ and the boys (Rob Lister, Nick Cope and Courtney Carter) were trying to make sure that in my first session back I was going to finish last. I managed to hold on alright up the hill, but it was a tough morning. It did kick my body into gear and I felt the best I had in four weeks on Sunday for my ninety minutes. The curve is heading in the right direction, so no complaints from me.

IT took a few days, but Jeff Hunt’s cheeks are back in place after some furious grinning from ear to ear when he was added to the Australian Olympic team last Wednesday.

The marathon runner, who grew up at Minto, will join Martin Dent and Michael Shelley in Australia’s assault on the 42km race in London.

Qualification for the event became an Olympian effort in itself when Athletics Australia set a qualifying time even lower than the time set by the IAAF.

Finally, officials decided to recognise the consistency of Hunt and Dent and offer them a place on the Aussie team.

“I’m not an Olympian yet,’’ the computer engineer said on the train to his eastern suburbs home last week.

“Only when I’m out there and running; not until August 12.’’

I’M GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!!!!

Well, by now you’ve figured out I made the Australian Olympic Team for London 2012 . YYYYEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!! I am so happy I cannot begin to describe it. Since I started running, I have wanted to run at the Olympics, and now I will have my chance.

It was a tense wait until the phone call came from Dion, but when it came, boy-o-boy, it was a phone call I was glad I did not miss. When I first answered the phone, I was unsure of what he was going to say, but in the end it was all good news.

So now, its head down, bum up while I start the build up towards London and hopefully a good result. Yes, I have run two marathons in the last three months, but I am not worried. I believe it is more mind over matter, and come August 12, I will be ready to give it my best. I just can’t stop smiling…. I’m gonna be in the Olympics…

NSWIS News – In the hunt for London

NSWIS athlete Jeff Hunt has been nominated to the Australian Olympic team as part of a six strong marathon team.

Hunt will make his Olympic debut in London, and will have the added pressure of running his third marathon in the space of only six months, a challenge he is looking forward to.

“It’s got to be a lot of mind over matter,” said the 29-year-old Hunt.

“Just because the old boys say you’ve got to recover and take it easy, that doesn’t mean you can’t change the mould.

“There’s no reason why I can’t run at my absolute best in London.”

Hunt will join fellow NSWIS athletes Dani Samuels, Ben St Lawrence and Youcef Abdi on the athletics team for the London Games.

Jeff Hunt one of three Aussie men picked to run marathon in London

CONVENTIONAL running wisdom says that three marathons in six months is far from ideal. But Jeff Hunt is ready and willing to give it his best shot after he and Martin Dent were added to the Australian squad for the London Olympics.

Michael Shelley was the only Australian man to better the tough Athletics Australia AA mark of two hours and 12 minutes inside the qualifying period.

But the AA selectors chose to also reward the consistency of Olympic debutants Hunt and Dent, both of whom have regularly run under the less onerous standard of 2:15:00 set by the IAAF.

Hunts two most recent marathons were in Beppu-Oita, Japan, in February 2:13:19 and Hamburg 2:14:19 late last month.
